Information You Submit
Search Queries
A name or location entered into a search tool is sent directly to the outside provider that operates it. That provider processes the query and supplies the results. We do not keep or log those search terms on our systems.
Messages and Contact Submissions
We retain an email or other direct message as needed to respond. It remains within our organization unless disclosure is required by a valid legal obligation.
Information Collected Automatically
When a page loads, the servers may receive basic technical and usage details:
- Page-view dates and times
- The pages viewed and the time spent on them
- Your device's assigned IP address
- Browser name and version
- Operating system and device type
- A referring site, when one supplied the visit
Cookies and Analytics
Small cookie files and analytics services help measure traffic in aggregate, including which pages receive visits and where sessions end. Browser controls can block cookies. If they are disabled, parts of the site may work differently.
How Information Is Used
- Route a search request to the selected partner
- Operate the site and maintain page speed
- Diagnose and repair technical faults
- Measure which pages are useful or need improvement
- Display advertising that may reflect visitor interests
No Criminal Records Database
Alleghany County Criminal History does not keep, combine, or sell a database of personal criminal records. It publishes general directions to records held by the Alleghany County Sheriff, the Clerk of Superior Court, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the North Carolina Sex Offender Registry. The site is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and visitor data is not assembled into consumer reports or third-party criminal-history files.
Outside Search Providers
Independent companies operate the search boxes. Information submitted through a tool is governed by that provider's privacy policy rather than this one. We do not control its retention or disclosure practices, so review its terms before running a query.
Links Beyond This Website
Links may lead to the Alleghany County government, North Carolina court and agency pages, legal-aid resources, or outside search services. Once you leave this site, the destination's privacy policy applies. Read it before providing personal information.
Some advertising companies may use their own systems to track activity across websites and select targeted ads.
When Information May Be Shared
Personal information is not sold. It may be available to:
- Analytics vendors that measure traffic and site performance
- Search providers that process a query you submit
- Advertising networks that serve ads on these pages
- A government or law-enforcement body acting under a valid legal order
Safeguarding Information
Standard security measures are used to protect collected information. No internet system can be guaranteed secure, however, and we cannot promise that a breach will never occur.
Visitors Under Age 18
This site is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal information from a person under 18. If we learn that a minor supplied such information, we will delete it.
Your Information Rights
Rights vary with the law that applies to you. North Carolina's Public Records Law, Chapter 132, governs records held by public agencies, while N.C.G.S. § 15A-151 limits disclosure of expunged criminal-record information. Those laws do not turn this private site into a government records custodian. Subject to applicable law, you may:
- Request access to information kept about you
- Ask that inaccurate information be corrected
- Seek deletion when the governing law provides that right
- Opt out of processing when an applicable law permits it
Policy Changes
This policy may be revised. A new version becomes available on this page with its updated effective date.
